I ran this 5K on the 4th just like last year! Last year I ran it with my boyfriend's sister and a family friend---this year we had tons of family in town for his sister's wedding this weekend so they ALL ran the race! You can read my recap from last year here.

I PR'd AGAIN! Only by one second but honestly it was a whole new race for me because I kept a steady pace the entire time and have learned so much about my pace in the past year. Last year I went out really fast with Tricia and then spent the last mile struggling and slowing down a lot as my lactic acid build-up prevented me from processing oxygen. That's what happens when you go out too fast! I leaned from that and have been working with my track coach to nail down my pace. I am so glad I was able to maintain a steady pace. I went out with Tricia at a 6:30ish pace and after only about a third of a mile I let her go. I settled into a 7:30 pace for about a half mile and then settled into 7:45's for the next 2 miles. At one point I was hovering around 7:59 pace and then at the very end I picked it back up to 7:30's to finish! When I heard the announcer rattling off times and I heard they were already in the 24 minutes and something seconds, I sprinted across that finish line to come in at 24:38, one second faster than last year, but at a much more steady pace throughout! Tricia took 5th place---last year she took 6th so it was awesome!
I am thrilled I can run this fast (for me) because I run a marathon pace of about 9:15 miles and usually run that on my regular runs throughout the week and weekend. I've only started to pick up the pace through my track work-outs---they have worked wonders!
At the finish line!
If you want to see my race on Nike Plus GPS, you can see it here! I love how my GPS watch will show me the route and my splits and times after each run. I love tracking my miles!
Did you race on the 4th of July? It seems like there are a ton of fun runs and races on this holiday!

Congrats on your PR Mandee!!! You were running at a great pace! I'm still not to 7:30 pace but I'm working on it :) I need to try these track work outs you speak of, sounds like they really make a difference. I ended up not running yesterday, just hit the gym and read all afternoon, until it was time to bbq and watch fireworks of course :)
